James Whistler "Billingsgate"
Medium: original etching. Catalogue reference: Kennedy 47. Executed by Whistler in 1859; this is a fine impression on watermarked cream laid paper printed in 1880 for Philip Gilbert Hamerton's very scarce "Etching and Etchers", published in an edition of 1000. Hamerton printed from the original Whistler plate, and selected this work not only for its recognized artistic merits, but also because the plate itself was not worn, and he would be able to produce a quality impression. Signed in the plate (not by hand). Plate size: 6 x 8 3/4 inches (152 x 225mm) with good margins.
