This particularly striking piece is composed of butterfly wings in the shape of a deer with fig ‘amate’ paper. Based on a pre-Hispanic design(found in Veracruz Mexico), the butterfly wings, taken from the species Doxocopa laure laure, Phoebis argante, Marphesia petreus and Caligo sp, appear brown, black and white on first glimpse. However, when turned or viewed from a certain angle, the white turns to an intense purple and then a spectacular bright blue.
The frame is made from tropical wood with a foreground of hand pressed, fig tree ‘amate’ paper. This is an environmentally sensitive product.
The purchase of this product contributes to the conservation of the Lacandona rainforest in Mexico.
For each butterfly used in the making of this piece, 200 others were saved through habitat conservation. None of these species are in danger of extinction and none were captured or killed for the purpose of creating this piece.
